Chronobiology, or circadian biology:

the science of the rhythm and signaling of time, seasons and the effect of light on our bodies.


Natural light is dynamic, phasing from darkness to bright light with blue wavelengths predominating in the morning, changing to cold white, neutral white, warm white and eventually amber tones in the evening. Each of these phases corresponds to different physiological processes in our bodies, from converting Vitamin D from the sun to it’s active hormone form through our skin, to activating or suppressing melatonin production via our pineal gland.


We have receptors for circadian processes throughout out body, from our skin to our eyes, that then communicate with our endocrine, lymphatic, gastrointestinal and other systems. Chronobiology goes far past feeling appropriately sleepy every night or wanting to “hibernate” in winter. It is implicit in regulating a wide range of biological and epigenetic processes.
